When those orders drop and you see Joint Base Elmendorf Richardson (JBER) on the page, your world shifts in an instant. Moving to Alaska is not like a typical PCS in the lower 48. It is officially considered an overseas move, which means more logistics, more unknowns, and more stress on your plate. But here is the good news: I have been through this move myself, and my team has guided hundreds of families through the exact same transition. Alaska is unique, but with the right support, it can become one of the most memorable chapters of your life.

Alaska Is Different, But in the Best Ways

The first thing you will notice is how full of contrasts life here really is. Anchorage has everything you would expect in a major city from Target runs to Costco stock ups, plus coffee stands seemingly on every corner. Yet in just 30 minutes, you can find yourself standing by a glacier or driving through valleys surrounded by mountains that look like they belong on a postcard. Alaska gives you convenience when you need it and adventure when your soul craves it. That balance is what makes living here so special.

Housing: Should You Rent or Buy?

This is one of the biggest questions families ask when their orders come in. The truth is that buying in Alaska can be one of the smartest moves you make, especially when you take advantage of your VA loan benefits. Homes here typically appreciate about 4 percent per year, which means you are building equity every month while enjoying the stability of owning your own place. If you are not sure about staying long term, house hacking can be a huge benefit. When my husband and I bought our first Alaska home, it was just over what we received in BAH. By renting out a room to a friend, we not only covered that gap but actually came out ahead each month. That single decision set us up for long term financial success, and it is an option more military families should explore.

Community and Connection

Moving far from family is never easy, and Alaska can feel even more isolating when you first arrive. As a military spouse, I understand what it feels like to pack up your entire life and start over in a place you have never been. The good news is that Alaska has one of the strongest and most supportive military communities I have ever seen. Between on base programs, local events, and families who welcome you with open arms, it does not take long to find your people. Those connections can turn this duty station into a place that feels like home faster than you think.

What You’ll Wish You Knew Ahead of Time

The winters are cold and the snow is real. But the right gear makes all the difference. Before long, you will be outside sledding, skiing, and even chasing the Northern Lights instead of staying cooped up indoors.

The daylight is another adjustment. In the summer, you will have over 20 hours of light, while the winters are much darker. At first, it can throw you off, but soon it becomes one of those quirks that makes Alaska so unique. Most families find ways to embrace it, whether that means blackout curtains for sleeping or soaking up every bit of sunshine in June.

Finally, plan ahead for shipping and shopping. Amazon Prime takes a little longer, seasonal items sell out quickly, and kids seem to outgrow boots at the worst times. Stocking up ahead of the season can save you a lot of stress.

Why We’re Here to Help

Since 2018, my team has had the privilege of serving more than 500 families through moves to and from Alaska. Many of those families were military, and almost every one of them faced the same questions you probably have right now. We do not just focus on the house itself. We look at the entire journey, from your BAH and long term goals to your moving timeline and family needs. Our job is to make this PCS feel less overwhelming and a lot more manageable.

Whether you are buying, selling, or simply trying to decide if renting makes sense, we have built resources designed specifically for military families. The goal is not just to help you get through the process but to help you feel settled, connected, and excited about living in Alaska.
