Hey, you!

Did you just get orders to Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson and you've decided to make the long drive with your four legged friends?

If so, you're definitely in the right spot!

Driving to Alaska via the ALCAN, or Alaska-Canadian Highway, can be a daunting task if you've never traveled through the remote wilderness before! Doing it with pets bring a whole new element to the trip, one that you should definitely think about as you begin to prepare. As pet lovers ourselves, we know how important it is to keep your pets comfortable during travel.

Below, you'll find our quick 5-tip guide for a safe and successful trip to the last frontier with your furry travel partners!

Tip #1: Any time your pets are outside of the vehicle, keep them on a leash. This is not only for their safety, but for other animals as well. It's very likely you'll see an abundance of wildlife as drive through Canada and having your pet leashed allows you to keep them from accidentally spooking an animal during a quick potty break.

Tip #2: Make sure your pet's microchip is up to date with current information, and have updated ID tags on their collar. In the event your pet was to get away from you, this will increase the chance the rescuers can get in touch with you.

Tip #3: Always carry fresh water and food for your pet. Depending on what time of the year you travel the ALCAN, not all shops and stores will be open. It could be hard to find pet food during the winter season. (Tip: collapsable bowls are a personal favorite of ours because they don't take up much space in your vehicle and can easily be stored when not in use!)

Tip #4: Remember, you will be driving through the remote wilderness for majority of the trip. Not all towns will have a vet, so it's a good idea to pack a small first aid kit for your pet. Some things you might consider including are bandages, gauze, antiseptic, Benadryl, etc. And don't forget any current medication your pet is currently on!

Tip #5: If you plan to travel during the winter, keep in mind that temperatures can drop as low as -50° on the Alaska Highway. Pack cold weather gear for your furry traveler to keep them safe and protected from the harsh winter conditions.

Oh, and a quick friendly reminder— be sure to have a copy of your pet's current rabies vaccination before you cross the Canadian border! You may or may not be asked to provide this documentation, but its best to be prepared, as they can deny your pet's entry without that proof.

Happy travels to you and your furry friends!
